FAQ

Losartan-hydrochlorothiazide is a Schedule 4 prescription-only medicine when bought from local Australian pharmacies. Our store policy allows you to place an order without providing a prescription, and the medicine can be sent by mail.

Losartan-hydrochlorothiazide is contraindicated during pregnancy because losartan can seriously harm a developing baby. Contact the prescriber managing your blood pressure as soon as possible if pregnancy is suspected or confirmed so the treatment can be reviewed and changed promptly.

Not necessarily. Products containing the same active ingredients can differ in colour, shape, size, markings, packaging and inactive ingredients. The exact appearance and imprint of the supplied tablets should be checked on the received pack.

Store the tablets at 25°C; short excursions from 15°C to 30°C are permitted. Keep the container tightly closed and protected from light, and keep it out of reach of children.

This medicine is taken by mouth, usually once daily, with or without food. Swallow the film-coated tablet with water and take it at a consistent time each day; the strength and dose should be the one selected for the individual treatment plan.

Losartan-hydrochlorothiazide is used to treat high blood pressure in adults when combination treatment is appropriate. It combines an angiotensin II receptor blocker with a thiazide diuretic to help lower blood pressure.

Description

Introduction

The medication Hyzaar is used to treat hypertension. This medication is a mixture of two drugs: a thiazide "water pill"/diuretic and an angiotensin receptor blocker. Blood vessels enlarge and relax when using Hyzaar. By increasing the volume of urine produced, the thiazide diuretic reduces the amount of extra water and salt in your body. Maintaining blood pressure control can help prevent kidney issues, heart attacks, and strokes.

Your doctor may prescribe this medication for other reasons. If you would like additional information on this medication, contact your doctor.

Even if your condition seems to be improving, don't stop taking Hyzaar earlier than your doctor has instructed. If you stop taking the drug too soon, it could make things worse. Until you know how this drug affects you, take caution when operating machinery, driving, climbing, or performing other risky actions. Avoid consuming alcohol. Never provide Hyzaar to a child without first consulting a physician.

How Should I Use Hyzaar?

Note: Don't give this medication to anyone else. Please take it as prescribed by your doctor, neither more nor less.

Hyzaar is administered orally with food, milk, or an antacid to avoid stomach upset. Unless your doctor instructs you otherwise, you may also take it with a full glass of water. Avoid lying down for half an hour after taking this medication. Administer the dosages regularly.

Excessive or Missed Dose

Any medication used in excess might have adverse effects on your health. Get in touch with your healthcare provider right away if you suspect an overdose.

If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as possible. Never take two doses at once if your next dose is almost due. Take one dosage at a time.

Which Medical Issues or Symptoms Should I Notify a Doctor About Before Using Hyzaar?

Consult a physician if any of the following apply to you or have previously affected you:

  • allergies or asthma;
  • lupus;
  • an allergy to sulfa medications;
  • liver or kidney problems;
  • gout;
  • low or high blood potassium levels;
  • congestive cardiac dysfunction;
  • diabetes.

Adverse Effects

If you have any of the following severe side effects, get in touch with your doctor right away:

  • allergy symptoms such as a skin rash, lips, tongue, and facial swelling, hives, itching, and breathing difficulties;
  • reduced or absent urination, as opposed to increasing urination;
  • quick increase in weight;
  • fainting and swelling;
  • pale complexion, dizziness, pounding or rapid heartbeat, and elevated heart rate;
  • confusion;
  • sleepiness, easy bruising or bleeding, dry mouth, increased thirst, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes), convulsions, or a restless feeling.

Less severe adverse effects:

  • skin rash;
  • sore throat;
  • dry cough;
  • backache;
  • nausea and dizziness;
  • stuffy or runny nose.

Other adverse effects could occur; this is not an exhaustive list. Tell your doctors about all the side effects you encounter.

Warning

Try not to get too hot or dehydrated when exercising in hot weather. Speak with your doctor to determine how much liquids you should consume daily. Unless advised otherwise by your doctor, stay away from potassium supplements and salt replacements while undergoing therapy. If taken during the latter six months of pregnancy, this medication has the potential to damage or even kill the fetus. See your doctor right away if you become pregnant or suspect you might be pregnant. Avoid abrupt standing or sitting up, particularly if you are an elderly patient. Regularly check your blood pressure. Tests for your renal function can also be necessary.

Customer questions

Asked by Emily Carter, Launceston, Australia

I'm in Launceston. Can I enter my postcode before ordering to see whether these tablets can be delivered to my address?

Answered by Support team

Yes. Enter your Launceston postcode during checkout to check whether delivery is available for your address before completing the order.

Asked by Liam Walsh, Canberra, Australia

My parcel arrived in Canberra after sitting through a very hot day. What should I check before taking the tablets?

Answered by Support team

Check that the container is closed and that the tablets are dry, intact and not discoloured or unusually soft. As the actual temperature and exposure time are unknown, set the medicine aside and ask a pharmacist for advice if it appears affected or may have been kept outside its labelled storage range.

Asked by Mia Thompson, Mount Isa, Australia

I live in Mount Isa, so delivery options can be limited. How can I check whether you can deliver this medicine to my area?

Answered by Support team

Enter your Mount Isa address and postcode at checkout to check delivery availability for your area. Availability can vary by destination, so this is the best way to confirm it before payment.

Asked by Jack Wilson, Coffs Harbour, Australia

I've inspected my order in Coffs Harbour and one tablet has a chipped coating. Can I still take it?

Answered by Support team

Do not use a tablet that is chipped or otherwise damaged. Keep the packaging and contact customer service within 7 days of delivery; a replacement or refund can be arranged.

Asked by Olivia Nguyen, Darwin, Australia

I'm about to start losartan-hydrochlorothiazide and regularly take ibuprofen for back pain. Is that something I need to consider?

Answered by Support team
Medical reviewed by Wendy Hayes

Yes. Regular use of anti-inflammatory medicines such as ibuprofen can reduce the blood-pressure-lowering effect and may increase the risk of kidney problems, especially if you are dehydrated or have kidney disease. Ask your prescriber or pharmacist to review the combination before using them together regularly.
