What are diuretics?

Diuretics are a family of medicines that increase the removal of salt and water through urine. Furosemide is a Schedule 4 Prescription Only Medicine in Australia. The prescription requirement applies to the furosemide product we list, and a prescription from an authorised prescriber is required. Diuretics as a broader class include different medicines, so their individual prescribing and regulatory details should always be checked rather than assumed from the class name alone.
