FAQ

The exact manufacturer for an individual order cannot be confirmed in advance. Check the manufacturer's name on the received carton or blister label, together with the active ingredient, strength, dosage form, batch number and expiry date.

Keep the tablets in their package and inspect them before use. The labelled storage condition is 25 °C, with permitted excursions between 15 °C and 30 °C; because the actual temperature and duration of exposure may be unknown, stability cannot be confirmed after an unusual excursion. Do not use tablets that are discoloured, cracked, damp or have damaged packaging.

Avoid alcohol while taking cyclobenzaprine. Alcohol can increase drowsiness, dizziness and impaired coordination caused by this centrally acting muscle relaxant, making falls and driving-related risks more likely.

During pregnancy, cyclobenzaprine should be used only when clearly needed after an individual prescriber assessment, as adequate controlled studies in pregnant women are lacking. During breastfeeding, use requires caution because it is not known with certainty whether it passes into human milk; a breastfed infant should be observed for unusual sleepiness or poor feeding.

Description

Flexeril is the brand name for cyclobenzaprine, supplied by us as an oral tablet in a single 15 mg strength. It belongs to the skeletal muscle relaxant class and is used as a short-term adjunct to rest and physiotherapy for painful muscle spasm linked to acute musculoskeletal conditions.

What Flexeril Is Used For

Cyclobenzaprine does not act directly on muscle tissue. Instead, it works centrally, reducing hyperactive nerve signalling at the level of the brainstem, which eases muscle spasm and the discomfort that comes with it. It is structurally related to tricyclic antidepressants such as amitriptyline, which explains some of its side-effect profile.

Cyclobenzaprine tablets are typically used for short courses, generally no longer than two to three weeks, because acute muscle spasm usually settles within this timeframe and longer use has not been shown to add benefit. It is not intended to treat spasticity caused by cerebral or spinal cord disease.

Essential Facts

No release type is specified for this 15 mg tablet, so its dosing frequency should not be inferred from general information for other cyclobenzaprine formulations. The dose and schedule should follow the directions supplied with the product or instructions from a healthcare professional. Cyclobenzaprine can generally be taken with or without food.

The most commonly reported effects are drowsiness, dry mouth, fatigue and dizziness. Blurred vision, constipation and reduced alertness can also occur. Because sedation is common, driving or operating machinery should be avoided until the individual response is known. Alcohol, opioids, benzodiazepines and other central nervous system depressants can increase this effect.

Seek prompt medical advice for a fast or irregular heartbeat, fainting, severe confusion, marked agitation, muscle rigidity or other serious symptoms. Older adults may be more susceptible to sedation, confusion, falls and anticholinergic effects, so suitability should be assessed carefully.

Important Notes

Cyclobenzaprine should not be used by anyone with a known hypersensitivity to it, during the acute recovery phase after a myocardial infarction, or by people with arrhythmias, heart block or conduction disturbances, heart failure or hyperthyroidism. It is also contraindicated during treatment with a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) and for 14 days after stopping one. Combining cyclobenzaprine with serotonergic medicines, including some SSRIs, SNRIs and tramadol, may increase the risk of serotonin syndrome. Extra caution is appropriate with conditions that may be worsened by anticholinergic effects, such as urinary retention or angle-closure glaucoma.

Use in pregnancy and breastfeeding should be discussed individually with a healthcare professional. It is not known whether cyclobenzaprine passes into human milk, and infant drowsiness is a potential concern. Safety and effectiveness in children have not been established.

Flexeril is not identified as an authorised medicinal product in the MHRA Products database for the United Kingdom, so the available product information reflects data from markets where cyclobenzaprine is an established treatment. We do not require a prescription to accept an order for this product, and our checkout, packing and delivery are handled entirely by our own team, with pharmacist-supported customer service available 24/7 by email, live chat or phone. Store the tablets at 25°C; excursions between 15°C and 30°C are permitted. Keep them away from moisture and direct light.

Customers comparing options for muscle spasm may also wish to look at Tizanidine, another centrally acting muscle relaxant we supply, or browse our wider Muscle Relaxants range.
