Migraine medicines
What types of medicine are used for migraine?
Migraine treatment commonly includes separate approaches for prevention and for acute attacks. Preventive medicines may be considered when attacks are frequent or disruptive, while acute treatments are intended for use during an attack. The appropriate approach depends on an individual clinical assessment, including attack pattern, other health conditions and medicines already being used.
How do the migraine medicines we list differ?
We list two oral tablet options with different active ingredients and roles. Inderal contains propranolol, a beta blocker conventionally used as a preventive option for migraine. Maxalt contains rizatriptan, a triptan used for acute migraine attacks. They are not interchangeable: one is associated with ongoing prevention, while the other is used for attack treatment under prescriber guidance.
| Product | Active ingredient | Form | Available strengths | Price from |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Inderal | Propranolol | Tablets | 10 mg, 20 mg, 40 mg, 80 mg | £49.63 |
| Maxalt | Rizatriptan | Tablet | 5 mg, 10 mg | £28.15 |
What package options and prices do we offer?
For Inderal, we offer packs from 30 to 360 tablets depending on strength, with the lowest listed unit price of £0.31 per tablet for the 10 mg strength in a 360-tablet pack. Maxalt is available in packs from 8 to 52 tablets for 5 mg and in 32- or 48-tablet packs for 10 mg; its lowest listed unit price is £2.91 per tablet for a 52-tablet pack of 5 mg tablets. Package size, strength and treatment role should be discussed with a prescriber rather than selected on price alone.
What is the prescription position in the United Kingdom?
Both propranolol and rizatriptan tablets are prescription-only medicines in the United Kingdom. Maxalt 5 mg and 10 mg tablets are UK authorised medicines. A prescriber can advise whether a preventive beta blocker, an acute triptan or another migraine-management approach is suitable; neither option should be assumed to suit every type of headache.
