FAQ

A prescription is required to obtain paroxetine from local pharmacies in Australia. However, our store policy allows you to order Paxil CR without a prescription and have it sent by mail.

Paroxetine extended-release tablets are generally taken once daily, at a consistent time each day. If changing the time, avoid taking two doses close together or taking an extra tablet; ask a pharmacist or prescriber for advice if a substantial timing change is needed.

A generic extended-release version contains paroxetine, the same active ingredient as Paxil CR. The manufacturer, tablet appearance and inactive ingredients may differ, so check the package label if you need to avoid a particular excipient.

Paroxetine is an SSRI antidepressant used to treat depression and several anxiety-related conditions, including obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, generalised anxiety disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder. Whether it is suitable depends on the condition being treated and the person's medical history.

Paroxetine extended-release tablets are taken by mouth once daily, usually in the morning, with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole; do not crush, chew or split it, as this can interfere with the extended-release action. The strength and dose are chosen individually by the prescriber.

Description

Paxil CR is a well-known selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressant medication. It reduces symptoms of major depression, fibromyalgia, PTSD, anxiety disorders, premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).

Tell your doctor if you are using any of the following medications, which are referred to as monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOI): phenelzine (Nardil), isocarboxazid (Marplan), tranylcypromine (Parnate), linezolid (Zyvox), or selegiline (Emsam, Zelapar, Eldepryl).

Which Medical Issues or Symptoms Should I Notify a Doctor About?

Consult a physician if any of the following apply to you or have previously affected you:

  1. Seizures, heart attacks, cardiac problems, strokes, and epilepsy during electroconvulsive therapy;
  2. Glaucoma;
  3. Suicidal ideas or actions;
  4. Manic-depressive bipolar disorder;
  5. Liver or kidney illness;
  6. Pregnancy, nursing, or intending to become pregnant;
  7. An unusual or adverse reaction to paroxetine, other medications, foods, preservatives, or dyes;
  8. Stomach or intestinal bleeding.

Forms of Paxil Cr and Dosage

Paxil Cr is available in liquid or tablet form for oral consumption.

Dosage Strength Formulation Typical Dosage Range
12.5 mg Extended-Release Tablets 12.5 mg to 62.5 mg per day
25 mg Extended-Release Tablets 12.5 mg to 62.5 mg per day
37.5 mg Extended-Release Tablets 12.5 mg to 62.5 mg per day

It is often taken in the morning or evening once a day. Take this medication with some beverages. When using Paxil CR, drinking multiple glasses of water daily is critical to saving your kidneys. It is acceptable to take it with or without food. Taking the medication with meals is preferable to help your body absorb it and ease stomach discomfort.

You should swallow the whole pill. Never eat, break, or crush it. To distribute the medicine equally, shake the suspension thoroughly before using it. Use a measuring spoon or medicine cup with a designated marking to ensure you take the right amount of medicine.

Paxil CR dosage varies according to patients and the conditions being treated. It goes without saying that you should speak with your doctor before using this drug and follow your doctor's directions.

Customer questions

Asked by Nicole W, Coffs Harbour, Australia

My Paxil CR parcel arrived in Coffs Harbour after a very hot day, and the box felt warm. What should I check before taking the tablets?

Answered by Support team

Do not assume the tablets are unaffected when the temperature and duration of heat exposure are unknown. Check the package for damage, compare the label with your order, and inspect the tablets for changes in colour, shape or condition; do not use them if anything appears compromised. Keep them in the original tightly closed container, away from moisture, at 20°C to 25°C.

Asked by Lachlan, Townsville, Australia

I started Paxil CR recently and have been very tired during my afternoon work shifts. Can paroxetine cause this?

Answered by Support team
Medical reviewed by John Buducci

Yes. Tiredness or drowsiness can occur with paroxetine, particularly when treatment is started. Avoid driving or operating machinery if you feel less alert, and avoid alcohol because it can worsen drowsiness. Seek medical advice if the fatigue is severe, persistent or affecting your ability to work safely.
