Description
Budez CR: Composition, Uses and Prescription Requirement
Budez CR is the brand name we use for oral budesonide supplied as a 3 mg controlled-release capsule. Each capsule releases budesonide gradually as it passes through the ileum and ascending colon, which lets the corticosteroid act mainly on the gut lining rather than throughout the whole body. We stock Budez CR in packs of 30, 60, 90 and 180 capsules, so customers can match a pack size to the length of the treatment course a clinician has recommended.
Composition and active ingredient
The active ingredient in every Budez CR capsule is budesonide 3 mg, formulated to delay and control release in the ileum and ascending colon. This targeted delivery is what separates budesonide from older, fully systemic corticosteroids such as prednisone or prednisolone: a large share of the absorbed dose is broken down by the liver on its first pass, so less corticosteroid reaches the general circulation.
What Budez CR is used for
Budesonide capsules of this kind are established for mild to moderate Crohn's disease affecting the ileum and/or ascending colon. Oral budesonide formulations are also used for microscopic colitis, although the appropriate formulation and regimen depend on the condition being treated. Gastroenterologists prescribe a course to bring active inflammation under control, then may reduce or taper the dose according to the response and treatment duration once symptoms such as diarrhoea, abdominal cramping and urgency settle. Customers wanting to read more about related bowel conditions and treatments can visit our Gastrointestinal Tract range.
Prescription requirement
Oral budesonide controlled-release capsules are classified as a Schedule 4, prescription-only medicine in Australia, so a prescriber's assessment is the normal route to this treatment. Our checkout does not require you to upload a prescription document before we accept an order, although Budez CR should still be started or continued under a doctor's supervision because dosing, duration and monitoring require individual judgement. This exact Budez CR brand has not been confirmed as an Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods-listed product; an ARTG entry is normally required before routine supply within Australia.
General Dosing and Warnings for Budez CR
How and when to take Budez CR
For induction of remission in adults with mild to moderate Crohn's disease affecting the ileum and/or ascending colon, a typical regimen is 9 mg, equivalent to three 3 mg capsules, taken once daily in the morning for up to eight weeks. The dose, treatment length and any subsequent reduction or maintenance regimen must follow the treating clinician's directions, as they can differ with the condition, response and previous corticosteroid use. Swallow each capsule whole with a full glass of water; do not crush or chew it because doing so can damage the controlled-release formulation. Budez CR can generally be taken with or without food, although taking it consistently in the same way and at the same time each day helps maintain a regular routine. Avoid grapefruit and grapefruit juice during treatment because they can raise budesonide levels by inhibiting its breakdown in the gut wall.
If you miss a dose
If a dose of Budez CR is missed, take it as soon as it is remembered on the same day. If it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, skip the missed one and continue with the normal daily schedule; doubling up to make up for a missed dose is not recommended, since it increases corticosteroid exposure without improving symptom control.
Suspected overdose
A single excess dose may not cause an obvious acute reaction, but repeated excess doses can bring on corticosteroid effects such as fluid retention, high blood pressure, mood changes or elevated blood glucose. Anyone who has taken substantially more than directed, or who develops severe symptoms such as marked swelling, confusion or breathing difficulty, should contact the Poisons Information Centre on 13 11 26 or seek urgent medical care, taking the Budez CR packaging along if possible.
Precautions Before Taking Budez CR
Allergy warnings
Budez CR should not be used by anyone with a known hypersensitivity to budesonide or to any of the capsule's other ingredients. A general history of unrelated allergies, such as hay fever or food allergy, is not on its own a reason to avoid this medicine, but any previous reaction to budesonide or another corticosteroid medicine should be raised with a prescriber before starting treatment.
Health condition warnings
Because a portion of each dose is absorbed into the bloodstream, Budez CR still carries the cautions that apply to corticosteroids generally. People with active or latent infections, including tuberculosis, chickenpox or herpes, may need treatment, assessment or monitoring, since corticosteroids can mask symptoms and slow healing. Diabetes requires closer blood glucose monitoring, as systemic corticosteroid exposure can reduce glucose tolerance. Liver impairment can raise budesonide blood levels because the liver normally clears most of the absorbed dose, and existing high blood pressure, osteoporosis, glaucoma, cataracts or peptic ulcer disease may need extra monitoring during a course. Pregnancy is classified as Category B3 in Australia, and breastfeeding mothers should discuss the balance of benefit and risk with their doctor, since budesonide passes into breast milk. Established paediatric use is limited to older children and adolescents from around eight years old, under specialist supervision with growth and adrenal monitoring; it is not established for younger children.
Possible Side Effects of Budez CR
Most people tolerate Budez CR reasonably well, particularly compared with fully systemic corticosteroids, but corticosteroid effects can still occur. Commonly reported effects include headache, indigestion, nausea, bloating, mild facial rounding, acne, mood changes, sleep disturbance and menstrual irregularities. Some people notice increased appetite or modest weight gain over a longer course.
Effects that call for prompt medical review include significant mood or behaviour changes, visual disturbance, unusual thirst or increased urination suggesting raised blood glucose, muscle weakness, black or tarry stools, or signs of infection such as fever or a sore throat that does not settle. Seek urgent help for facial or throat swelling, severe breathing difficulty or other signs of a serious allergic reaction. Corticosteroid treatment can reduce adrenal gland output, so a doctor may check adrenal function and taper the dose rather than stopping it abruptly. The need for tapering depends on the dose, treatment duration, response and recent exposure to other corticosteroids.
Medicines That Can Interact With Budez CR
Budesonide is broken down mainly by the liver enzyme CYP3A4, so medicines that inhibit or induce this enzyme can meaningfully change how much budesonide reaches the bloodstream. Ketoconazole, itraconazole, clarithromycin, ritonavir and other strong CYP3A4 inhibitors can raise budesonide levels and the risk of corticosteroid side effects, while enzyme inducers such as rifampicin, carbamazepine and phenytoin can lower budesonide's effect by speeding up its clearance. Grapefruit and grapefruit juice can also increase budesonide exposure and should be avoided during treatment.
Combining Budez CR with other corticosteroids, including inhaled or topical products used regularly, adds to overall corticosteroid exposure. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines and other drugs that can irritate the stomach lining may increase gastrointestinal side effects when taken alongside budesonide. Diabetes medicines, including insulin, may need dose adjustment because budesonide can raise blood glucose, and live vaccines are generally avoided when corticosteroid exposure is high enough to suppress the immune response. Cholestyramine and other bile acid-binding agents may reduce budesonide absorption if taken too close together. Anyone taking prescription or over-the-counter medicines, herbal preparations or supplements alongside Budez CR should mention them to a doctor or our pharmacist team so that a genuine interaction risk can be checked.
After Using Budez CR
Storage
Keep Budez CR capsules below 25°C, away from direct light and moisture, in their original, tightly closed container and out of reach of children. A bathroom cabinet is usually too humid; a linen cupboard or bedroom drawer away from direct sun is generally a better choice.
Disposal
Do not dispose of unused or expired Budez CR capsules in household rubbish or down the sink or toilet. Participating Australian pharmacies accept unused medicines through the Return Unwanted Medicines program at no charge, and returning them this way keeps budesonide out of waterways and away from anyone who should not take it. Our customer support team, reachable by email, online chat or phone, can point customers towards their nearest participating pharmacy if that is easier than searching independently.
Alternatives to Budez CR Capsules
Several other options exist for people who cannot use Budez CR or whose disease pattern calls for a different approach, and any change between them should go through a treating clinician rather than self-substitution. Other budesonide-based products use the same active ingredient in different forms: Entocort EC is another budesonide controlled-release capsule brand, Budenofalk is available in budesonide formulations including granules, and Cortiment or Uceris deliver budesonide as an extended-release tablet intended for ulcerative colitis rather than Crohn's disease. These products contain the same active ingredient but are not interchangeable pack-for-pack with Budez CR without a prescriber's guidance.
For ulcerative colitis, a doctor may consider mesalazine-based tablets such as Pentasa or Asacol, which work through a different, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory mechanism. Their role should not be assumed to be the same in Crohn's disease or microscopic colitis, and the correct option depends on the diagnosis and location of inflammation. Where broader or more urgent control of Crohn's disease is needed, or when budesonide's targeted release is not sufficient, a fully systemic corticosteroid such as Prednisolone or prednisone may be used instead, typically for a shorter course because of their wider range of systemic effects. We currently supply Prednisolone alongside Budez CR, so customers who need to compare a targeted capsule with a conventional oral corticosteroid tablet can review both within the one order.
