FAQ

Hydroxyzine tablets are Schedule 4 prescription-only medicines in Australia, so a prescription is required when buying them from a local pharmacy. Under our store policy, you may place an order without a prescription and have it sent by mail.

Yes. Tell the surgeon, dentist or anaesthetist that you take hydroxyzine, including when you last took it. It can add to the sedative effects of anaesthetics and other medicines that depress the central nervous system. Do not stop or change the dose unless the clinician managing the procedure advises you to do so.

We cannot confirm the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods status of the exact product supplied before you receive it. Therapeutic goods supplied in Australia generally require ARTG inclusion; check the TGA register using the manufacturer, product name, strength and dosage form shown on the received package.

Store the tablets at 20°C to 25°C. Brief temperature excursions between 15°C and 30°C are permitted. Keep the container tightly closed and protect it from moisture and light.

Hydroxyzine 10 mg and 25 mg tablets are taken orally, swallowed with water. They can generally be taken with or without food, following the dose and timing prescribed for the condition being treated. Avoid alcohol and grapefruit products, and do not take more often or in a higher dose than directed.

Hydroxyzine is a sedating antihistamine and anxiolytic. It is used for symptomatic relief of anxiety and for itching caused by allergic conditions, including hives, contact dermatitis and other itchy skin conditions. It may also be used in some settings for nausea, vomiting or pre-procedure sedation.

Description

Usage

Atarax is used before and after general anesthesia to fight worry and angst in patients and has a calming effect. The medication can also be used to treat allergic reactions, such as hives, rash, itching, and other allergic dermatologic symptoms, to specific allergens like poison ivy. For further medical reasons, your physician or another healthcare professional may prescribe Atarax.

How to Take and Dosage

Dosage Form Dosage Strength Usual Adult Dose
Tablet 10 mg 25-100 mg/day
Tablet 25 mg 25-100 mg/day
Syrup 10 mg/5 mL 10-50 mg 4 times a day

Patients should take Atarax in accordance with the dosage regimen that a physician has prescribed.
Atarax can be taken either alone or with food. Take the tablet and enough water in your mouth at the same time.
The entire tablet of Atarax is intended to be swallowed. Chewing the tablet before swallowing will not cause it to split into smaller pieces.

Do not deviate from your doctor's advised dosage regimen. Take the medication at the same time every day to prevent missing doses.

If you regularly take the tablets and forget to take them, take the missed dose of Atarax as soon as you remember it. If your scheduled dose is about to expire, take one dose of Atarax. Do not take two doses simultaneously to catch up on the dosing schedule.

If you need more advice about Atarax, don't hesitate to ask your doctor or any other medical professional.

Cautions and Warnings

Patients who are not supposed to use Atarax include those who have previously experienced an adverse reaction to any of the ingredients in Atarax, who are taking GHB-based medications at the moment, and pregnant women in the first trimester.

Should any of these apply to you, please speak with your physician or any other qualified healthcare provider.

Important: Using Atarax may make it difficult to carry out regular everyday tasks, such as driving. Don't use Atarax to perform jobs you don't feel comfortable doing.

Alcohol beverages and Atarax should not be combined. Additionally, use extra caution when using Atarax with other medications that compound the effects of sedatives and sleep aids. Consult your physician or other healthcare professional for more information on medications that make you drowsy.

Individuals over 65 may be more vulnerable to the medication's side effects.

It is not advised to use Atarax on infants. The manufacturer is unaware of any studies on its effects on newborns.

Asked by Lachlan Turner, Mount Isa, Australia

I live in Mount Isa, outside a major city. How can I find out whether you can deliver hydroxyzine tablets to my area?

Answered by Support team

Please enter your Mount Isa address and postcode at checkout to check delivery availability for your area. We cannot confirm remote-area availability until the destination details are checked.

Asked by Tahlia Cooper, Bunbury, Australia

My hydroxyzine parcel arrived in Bunbury after sitting outside on a very hot day. What should I check before taking the tablets?

Answered by Support team

Check that the container is intact and tightly closed, and that the tablets are dry and have not changed in colour, smell or texture. Store them at 20°C to 25°C; because the actual heat exposure is unknown, do not use tablets that appear altered or compromised until the product has been checked.

Asked by Emily Harris, Rockhampton, Australia

I take hydroxyzine tablets for hives and am trying to become pregnant. Is it safe to keep taking them?

Answered by Support team
Medical reviewed by Wendy Hayes

Hydroxyzine must not be used during pregnancy. As pregnancy planning and alternatives need an individual assessment, contact the prescriber before continuing treatment or if you think you may be pregnant.
