Antifungals
What are antifungals used for?
Antifungals are medicines used for fungal infections. They include treatments for infections affecting areas such as the skin, nails, mouth, genital area, or internal parts of the body, depending on the medicine and the infection being treated. The right approach depends on factors including the site of infection, the suspected fungus, the severity of symptoms, and whether a topical or oral medicine is appropriate. A prescriber can determine whether an antifungal medicine is suitable.
What types of antifungal medicines are available?
Antifungal treatment includes several established groups. Topical creams, gels, sprays, and medicated nail products are often considered for local infections, while oral tablets or capsules may be used when a systemic treatment is needed. Azole antifungals are a long-established group and include triazole medicines such as fluconazole. Other established groups include polyenes and allylamines. These groups are not interchangeable: their usual uses, dosage forms, and prescribing considerations can differ.
What should customers in Canada know about fluconazole?
Fluconazole is authorised for human use in Canada. Prescription classification applies separately to the form being supplied: the Diflucan tablet form we list requires a prescription. This classification does not mean that every antifungal medicine, form, or product has the same prescription status. Discuss the intended use and the appropriate medicine with a qualified prescriber before purchasing.
Which antifungal medicine do we list?
We list Diflucan, an oral tablet containing fluconazole and belonging to the triazole azole antifungal group. Confirmed strengths are 50 mg, 100 mg, 150 mg, 200 mg, and 400 mg. Package quantities vary by strength, from 30 to 360 tablets. Prices start from C$121.25; the lowest listed unit price is C$1.64 per tablet for the 360-tablet 50 mg package.
