General Infomation:

Tenoretic is a combination of the beta-blocker drug atenolol and the diuretic chlorthalidone. Tenoretic may be prescribed alone or in combination with other drugs. Atenolol, the beta blocker, decreases the force and rate of heart contractions. Chlorthalidone, the diuretic, helps your body produce and eliminate more urine. This helps in lowering blood pressure. This medicament is taken to cure high blood pressure.

Don’t stop treatment with Tenoretic earlier than it was prescribed by your doctor even if you notice improvements of your condition. Stopping the medication too early may worsen your condition. Be careful about doing dangerous tasks, driving, operating machinery or climbing until you are aware how this drug affects you. Don’t drink alcohol. Always contact a medic before giving Tenoretic to a child.

What symptoms or conditions should I report to a doctor before I take this medicine?

It is important to report to a doctor if you have or had the following conditions:

  •     an unusual or allergic reaction to Tenoretic or its components, other foods, dyes, preservatives or medicines
  •     chest pain
  •     angina
  •     decreased urine
  •     diabetes
  •      breathing or lung disease
  •     gout
  •     heart or vessel disease (slow heart rate, heart block, worsening heart failure, sick sinus syndrome or Raynaud’s disease
  •     kidney or liver disease
  •     thyroid disease
  •     pheochromocytoma
  •     breast-feeding
  •     pregnant or trying to get pregnant

How do I take this medicine?

Note: This remedy was prescribed to you only. Don’t share this medicament with others. Follow strictly your doctor’s recommendations. Don’t take more or longer than your doctor recommended.

Tenoretic is taken orally with a glass of water with or without food. Take the doses on the rigid schedule.

Overdosage:

Taking any medicine in large doses you can have serious consequences for your health. If you feel an overdose, contact your health care professional instantly.

In large doses, this remedy may cause the following conditions:

  • dizziness
  • an unusually fast or slow heartbeat
  • chest pain
  • slurred speech
  • fainting
  • weakness
  • coma
  • shortness of breath
  • confusion

What should be done if I missed the dose?

In case you forgot to take the dose, take it at your earliest opportunity. Never double your dose if it is almost time for your next dose. Take only one dose at once.

  • Lithium
  • Clonidine
  • Allopurinol
  • MAO inhibitors
  • Medicines for chest pain or angina
  • Antacids
  • Dolasetron
  • Calcium salts
  • Medicines for diabetes
  • Cocaine or amphetamine
  • Mefloquine
  • Griseofulvin
  • Prochlorperazine
  • Liothyronine
  • Hawthorn
  • Some medicines for lowering cholesterol (cholestyramine or colestipol)
  • Medicines to control heart rhythm
  • Water pills or diuretics
  • Medicines for colds and breathing difficulties
  • Rifampin
  • Medicines for high blood pressure or heart failure
  • Some antibiotics which increase sensitivity to sunlight (sulfonamides, tetracyclines)

Side Effects:

Contact your physician immediately if you notice any of the following

Serious side effects:

  • allergy like skin rash, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, hives, itching, difficulty breathing
  • easy bruising/bleeding
  • dark urine
  • yellowing eyes/skin
  • new or worsening symptoms of heart failure (severe tiredness, swelling of ankles/feet, unexplained/sudden weight gain, shortness of breath)
  • very slow/irregular heartbeat
  • trouble breathing
  • vomiting
  • persistent nausea
  • mood/mental changes (mood swings, depression)
  • severe abdominal/stomach pain
  • toe/joint pain
  • signs of infection (persistent sore throat, fever)
  • blue toes/fingers
  • change in the amount of urine (not including the normal increase in urine when you first start this drug)

Less serious side effects:

  • slow heartbeat
  • nausea
  • dizziness
  • decreased sexual ability has been reported infrequently
  • tiredness
  • lightheadedness
  • diarrhea

Important Information:

Check your blood pressure on a regular basis. Tenoretic may make your skin more sensitive to sun or ultraviolet light.

Consult your physician if you are pregnant, breast-feeding or trying to get pregnant. In case you have diabetes, Tenoretic may prevent the fast/pounding heartbeat you would usually feel when your blood sugar level falls too low (hypoglycemia). Other symptoms of a low blood sugar level, such as dizziness and sweating, are unaffected by this drug. Check your blood sugar levels regularly. Contact your doctor immediately if you feel symptoms of high blood sugar such as increased thirst/urination. Your diabetes medication or diet may need to be adjusted.

Storage:

Tenoretic should be stored at room temperature, in a tightly closed container. Protect from moisture, direct heat, and light. Do not store in the bathroom or near a sink. Keep Tenoretic out of the reach of children and away from animals.
