General Information:

Hytrin is an alpha 1 blocker which relaxes the smooth muscles of the arteries, the prostate, and the bladder neck. It helps to lower blood pressure. Relaxing the smooth muscles around the bladder neck relieves urinary obstruction caused by an enlarged prostate (prostate hypertrophy).

Your doctor may prescribe this remedy for other purposes. Contact your physician if you need to learn more information about this drug.

Don’t stop treatment with Hytrin earlier than it was prescribed by your doctor even if you notice improvements of your condition. Stopping the medication too early may worsen your condition. Be careful about doing dangerous tasks, driving, operating machinery or climbing until you are aware how this drug affects you. Don’t drink alcohol. Always contact a medic before giving Hytrin to a child.

What symptoms or conditions should I report to a doctor before I take this medicine?

It is important to report to a doctor if you have or had the following conditions:

  •     an unusual or allergic reaction to Hytrin, other medicines, preservatives, foods or dyes
  •     kidney or liver disease
  •     heart problems
  •     severe loss of body fluids (dehydration through excessive sweating, vomiting, or diarrhea)
  •     mineral/electrolyte problems (e.g., imbalance of sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium)
  •     diabetes
  •     gout
  •     asthma
  •     pregnancy or if you are trying to get pregnant
  •     any allergies especially to sulfa drugs

You should not take Hytrin if you are unable to urinate or in case you have allergy to hydrochlorothiazide.


How do I take this medicine?

Note: This remedy was prescribed to you only. Don’t share this medicament with others. Follow strictly your doctor’s recommendations. Don’t take more or longer than your doctor recommended.

Hytrin is taken orally with some water. To avoid stomach upset you may take it with milk or food. It is better to take the first dose before going to bed in order to minimize the chances of getting dizzy or fainting. Try to take it at the same time each day. Take your doses at regular intervals.


Taking any medicine in large doses you can have serious consequences for your health. If you feel an overdose, contact your health care professional instantly.

In large doses, this remedy may cause the following conditions:

  • a weak but rapid pulse
  • fainting
  • cold, clammy skin
  • dizziness
  • shallow breathing

What should be done if I missed the dose?

In case you forgot to take the dose, take it at your earliest opportunity. Never double your dose if it is almost time for your next dose. Take only one dose at once.


  • tadalafil (Cialis)
  • sildenafil (Revatio, Viagra)
  • other blood pressure medications, especially verapamil (Covera, Calan, Verelan, Isoptin)
  • vardenafil (Levitra)

This list of interactions may be not complete. Provide your medical practitioners entire list of medicines, herbs, dietary supplements or non-prescription drugs you take. Moreover tell them whether you drink alcohol, use illegal drugs or smoke. Particular items may interact with your drug.


Side Effects:

Contact your physician immediately if you notice any of the following

Serious side effects:

  • allergy like skin rash, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, hives, itching, difficulty breathing
  • ringing in the ears
  • swelling of the hands or feet
  • irregular or unusually fast heartbeat
  • chest pain
  • easy bleeding or bruising
  • decreased sexual ability
  • males may experience painful, prolonged erection. In this case stop using this drug and contact your doctor.

Less serious side effects:

  • constipation
  • dizziness
  • fatigue
  • drowsiness
  • dry eyes
  • headache
  • nasal congestion
  • loss of appetite

Important Information:

Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, breast-feeding or trying to get pregnant before you start taking Hytrin. Avoid standing or sitting up quickly, especially if you are an older patient. This diminishes the dizzy or fainting spells risk. This drug can affect the pupils of your eyes during cataract surgery. If you have cataract surgery during your treatment with Hytrin, tell the surgeon ahead of time that you take Hytrin.


Hytrin should be stored at room temperature, in a tightly closed container. Protect from moisture, direct heat, and light. Do not store in the bathroom or near a sink. Keep Hytrin out of the reach of children and away from animals.
