Carafate (Sucralfate)

Generic name: Sucralfate

Brand names: Antepsin, Sucrafil, Sucramal, Sucrase, Sulcrate, Ulcar, Ulcerban, Ulcerlmin, Ulcermin

Pharmacological action:

Gastroprotective preparation that creates a protective pellicle, increases the synthesis of Pg, reduces the activity of pepsin and salt binds bile acids. Carafate dissolves in an acidic medium, forms a sticky paste-like polymer that has alkaline properties. Being in the stomach and duodenum 12, changes into a polyanion with a lot of free negative charges that form strong bonds with the positive radical of protein exudate (albumin, fibrinogen) mucosa. Secures the affected areas of mucosa from the influence of aggressive factors (HCl, bile and pepsin don’t get into contact with the ulcerated surface) for 6 h.

Indications:

Peptic ulcer and 12 duodenal ulcer (prophylaxis and treatment), gastro, hyperacid gastritis, symptomatic ulcers, stress ulcers of the gastrointestinal tract, hyperphosphatemia in patients with uremia who are on hemodialysis, reflux esophagitis, NSAID-gastropathy, reflux gastritis, ulcer medication, heartburn.

Contraindications:

Hypersensitivity, bleeding from ZHKT, chronic renal failure, dysphagia or obstruction of the gastrointestinal tract. Pregnancy, breastfeeding.

Side effects:

Constipation or diarrhea, dry mouth, drowsiness, urticaria, itching, headache, dizziness, stomachalgia, nausea, pain in the lumbar region, rash.

Dosage:

Inside, without mastication with a small amount of water for 1 hour before meals and at bedtime, adults – 0.5-1 g 4 times daily or 1 g morning and evening, or 2 g 2 times daily (after waking up in the morning and before bedtime on an empty stomach); the maximum daily dose – 8-12, the average duration of medication of peptic ulcer – 4-6 weeks, if needed – up to 12 weeks. Children – 0.5 g 4 times per day.

Interaction:

Antacid medicines reduce the effectiveness (if needed the joint appointment of antacids they should be taken in 30 minutes before or 30 minutes after taking Carafate). Reduces the absorption of tetracyclines, digoxin, ranitidine, cimetidine, indirect anticoagulants and theophylline (the interval between their intake must be at least 2 h), norfloxacin, ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin. Reduces the absorption of Css phenytoin (possibly the resumption of seizures). The interval between the intake – 2 hours
