Paxil

 

General Information:

Paxil (paroxetine) belongs to an antidepressant drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). It affects chemicals in the brain which have become unbalanced. Don’t take MAO inhibitors (linezolid, isocarboxazid, rasagiline, phenelzine, selegiline, and tranylcypromine) within 2 weeks after and before you use Paxil.
What is the dosage and how should Paxil be taken?

What if I forgot to take a dose?

  • if you feel irritable, more depressed, impulsive, agitated, hostile, restless, aggressive, hyperactive (mentally or physically), or have suicidal thoughts

  • severe nervous system reaction – high fever, very stiff (rigid) muscles, confusion, sweating, fast or uneven heartbeats, fainting, tremors
  • unusual bone pain or tenderness, bruising, swelling
  • severe skin reaction – sore throat, fever, burning in your eyes, swelling in your face or tongue, skin pain, followed by a red or purple skin rash which increases (especially in the face or upper body) and causes peeling and blistering
  • unusual bleeding (mouth, nose, vagina, or rectum), coughing up blood, easy bruising
  • low levels of sodium in the body – confusion, headache, feeling unsteady, severe weakness, slurred speech, loss of coordination

Less serious side effects:

  • constipation, mild nausea, weight changes
  • yawning, dry mouth, or ringing in the ears
  • sleep problems (insomnia), feeling nervous or restless
  • impotence, decreased sex drive, or difficulty having an orgasm
  • drowsiness, mild headache, tired feeling, dizziness

Interaction:

  • tramadol
  • drugs to cure mental illness – thioridazine, lithium and others
  • tamoxifen
  • tryptophan (sometimes called L-tryptophan)
  • any other antidepressant
