General Information:

Paxil (paroxetine) belongs to an antidepressant drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). It affects chemicals in the brain which have become unbalanced. Don’t take MAO inhibitors (linezolid, isocarboxazid, rasagiline, phenelzine, selegiline, and tranylcypromine) within 2 weeks after and before you use Paxil.

What is the dosage and how should Paxil be taken?

Important: Paxil was prescribed for your use only. Don’t share it with other people even if they have similar symptoms or condition. Your therapy shouldn’t last longer than your physician prescribed. Carry out the instructions of your health care provider carefully.

Side effects:

Call your physician right away if you feel the side effects listed below:

  • allergy (skin rash, swelling of the tongue, lips and face, itching, hives, difficulty breathing)
  • mood or behavior changes
  • panic attacks
  • anxiety
  • trouble sleeping
  • if you feel irritable, more depressed, impulsive, agitated, hostile, restless, aggressive, hyperactive (mentally or physically), or have suicidal thoughts
  • high levels of serotonin in the body – hallucinations, agitation, fast heart rate, fever, nausea, overactive reflexes, diarrhea, vomiting, fainting, loss of coordination
  • severe nervous system reaction – high fever, very stiff (rigid) muscles, confusion, sweating, fast or uneven heartbeats, fainting, tremors
  • unusual bone pain or tenderness, bruising, swelling
  • severe skin reaction – sore throat, fever, burning in your eyes, swelling in your face or tongue, skin pain, followed by a red or purple skin rash which increases (especially in the face or upper body) and causes peeling and blistering
  • unusual bleeding (mouth, nose, vagina, or rectum), coughing up blood, easy bruising
  • low levels of sodium in the body – confusion, headache, feeling unsteady, severe weakness, slurred speech, loss of coordination

Less serious side effects:

  • constipation, mild nausea, weight changes
  • yawning, dry mouth, or ringing in the ears
  • sleep problems (insomnia), feeling nervous or restless
  • impotence, decreased sex drive, or difficulty having an orgasm
  • drowsiness, mild headache, tired feeling, dizziness

  • tramadol
  • drugs to cure mental illness – thioridazine, lithium and others
  • tamoxifen
  • tryptophan (sometimes called L-tryptophan)
  • any other antidepressant
